The Reverend Dr. Joan S. Parrott

On September 19, 2017, The Reverend Dr. Joan S. Parrott was elected to the office of Senior Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hampton. Senior Pastor Parrott is the 11th Pastor of the church and the first female pastor in First Baptist Church of Hampton's 154-year history.

The Reverend Dr. Joan S. Parrott was born in Newark, NJ, and resides in Charlotte, North Carolina. She comes from a family of prominent church leaders and has more than 30 years of experience in Church Administration and Nonprofit Corporation Leadership. In February 2016, she made history when she was elected the first female Interim Pastor of First Baptist Church of Hampton in its 152 years of existence. She has also served as the former Executive Pastor of the First Baptist Church of Hampton and The Park Church in Charlotte, North Carolina.

An American Baptist minister, Dr. Parrott was the first woman to be ordained in the 144-year history of her home church, the Bethany Baptist Church in Newark, New Jersey. Since then she has preached, taught and consulted with executive leadership and clergy throughout the United States and abroad, and on two occasions has had the rare privilege of private audiences with the late Pope John Paul II.

Reverend Parrott holds earned degrees from Montclair State University, Montclair, New Jersey; Union Theological Seminary in New York City; and United Theological Seminary, Dayton, Ohio. She also has post-graduate certificates from The Ecumenical Institute of Bossey in CĂ©ligny, Switzerland, and the John F. Kennedy School of Government Community Builder Fellowship Program at Harvard University.

Dr. Parrott has served American Baptist Churches, USA as Deputy General Secretary for Cooperative Christianity and the Director of the Board of International Ministries' Missionary Recruitment and Volunteer Services Program. Her lifelong commitment to world peace and community renewal are exemplified in previous positions including serving as a fourth grade teacher; an Adult Education Guidance Counselor; Peace Corps Volunteer in Niger, West Africa; Regional Program Manager for Contracts and Procurement with the Internal Revenue Service, New York City; Executive Director of the Lighthouse Community Services Homeless Shelter in Newark, New Jersey; Vice President of the National Council of Churches in the U.S.A.; Community Builder in Camden, New Jersey; and Vice President of the Children’s Defense Fund at Alex Haley Farm in Clinton, Tennessee.

Dr. Parrott continues to strive for a life defined by humility, compassion, integrity and excellence, where her actions and deep faith in God are a paradigm of servant-leadership and a sign of hope in a divided world.
